Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt signed into law Missouri Senate Bill No. 30 on June 13, 2007. It will become effective August 28, 2007.
The bill authorizes a tax exemption for motor fuel sold to an interstate transportation authority, a city transit authority, or a city utilities board to operate a public mass transportation facility (Section 142.817). This is important to transit providers across the state of Missouri, including the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, which expects to save $450,000.00 in taxes on fuel. The positive revenue return can then be used to pay for more direct operating costs.
Missouri SB 30 is an important step by the state in finding creative ways to add funding to transit operations even when they are unable to pass funding level increases in the state budget.
