Public transit? Recycling? Trash pick-up? Public safety? You have an opportunity to weigh in as to how your city officials spend your dollars as Kansas City, Mo., begins FY 2010 budget preparations. Your voice counts.
The KCMO council seeks citizen input on this year's city budget. Please make your voice heard by attending a city hearing or e-mail your ideas to the entire council.
On Jan. 15, per city charter mandate, the city manager delivered a staff generated draft budget to the mMayor. The city charter offers the mayor nearly one month to revise the staff draft and present it to the Council for our revisions. We will begin our review on Feb. 12 and vote on Thursday, March 26, 2009. The city fiscal year runs from May 1 to April 30.
There has been a great deal of interpretation of staff's proposed budget. Some of it accurate. Some not. The purpose of the city manager's draft, the current draft, serves as a launching pad for the governing leadership to evaluate alternatives. As we have seen in past years, nothing is absolute until the final vote is cast.
Article VIII of the city charter lays out the process and details of the budget preparations and implementation and can be found on the city Web site, www.kcmo.org.
